The UCI School of Medicine is dedicated to advancing medical knowledge and clinical practice through scholarly research, education and high-quality care. Each year, the school educates more than 400 medical students and nearly 150 PhD and MS students. More than 700 residents and fellows are trained at the UCI Medical Center and affiliated institutions. Multiple MD, PhD and MS degrees are offered. The school has 24 departments, ranging from basic science research to clinical medical and surgical specialties. It has research, clinical and teaching relationships with the VA Long Beach Healthcare System and Long Beach Memorial Medical Center. The School of Medicine Communications and Public Relations department is a full-service communications support team dedicated to providing comprehensive communications support on behalf of the Office of the Dean. Our primary responsibility is to oversee and implement effective communication strategies for various stakeholders, including faculty, staff, students, and the wider community. We accomplish this through our website, electronic communications, social media, media relations, and both internal and external outreach programs. Upholding and maintaining the university’s reputation and brand standards is integral to our role and ongoing efforts to create communications that highlight the reputation of our school as a leading education and research institution. Our small team of dedicated communications professionals takes pride in their work and ability to promptly respond to communications needs. Under the general direction of the Digital Communications Manager and the Director of Communications and Public Relations in the School of Medicine (SOM) and in close partnership with the UCI Health Communications and Marketing and select web/SEO vendors, the Digital Communications Specialist is an integral member of the Communications team and participates in the development and execution of School of Medicine goals. The Digital Communications Specialist is responsible for overseeing, maintaining and enhancing all aspects of the School of Medicine’s websites to ensure they serve as an up-to-date and progressive central resource in promoting the School of Medicine and departments associated with it and attracting new students, faculty and staff at all levels. The preferred candidate utilizes their skills as a seasoned and experienced digital communications professional to create copy, design and layout for a variety of non-routine and moderately complex digital applications. They ensure search engine optimization and are proficient in developing social media platforms. Additionally, they demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of industry practices, organizational policies and procedures, and exhibit sound judgment in selecting methods and techniques to obtain effective solutions. The preferred candidate will have proficiency in (1) creating, designing, producing, organizing and updating digital, media and written materials for a brand; (2) using website Content Management Systems (CMSs) to create and manage website content; (3) liaising with clients to provide exceptional customer service and guidance to achieve brand and mission consistency and improvement. They will (1) have a strong understanding of web design principles, user experience and information architecture; (2) possess the ability to translate technical concepts in a written and visual form to a mainstream audience; (3) possess the ability to read, write and maintain HTML and other code languages essential for website development and digital communications. This individual is responsible for prioritizing and facilitating the development of content and assets, including creating and securing web copy, images and video assets that properly illustrate the mission and vision of the school. They will also coordinate with database owners to integrate content into the website. Additionally, they will provide outstanding customer service to all SOM departments, ensuring timely updates, organization and prioritization of the website with appropriate messaging. The role also involves ensuring the integrity of web links, establishing and maintaining standards for web content and graphics, as well as procedures for posting and editing. Collaboration with UCI Health Marketing/Design and IT departments, as well as outside vendors, to develop, configure, maintain and optimize website performance is also essential. Other duties may be assigned. Please note that this position is primarily remote and will be discussed with the hiring manager.

Required:
  • A minimum of 5 years of proven experience managing websites and digital communications with a minimum of 3 years of experience in graphic design, typography and layout with exceptional skills in industry-standard design programs as needed or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Experience with website design using HTML, CSS, JavaScript and other code languages essential for website development and digital communications.
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships across the Health System. Ability to maintain a work pace appropriate to the workload. Must demonstrate customer service skills appropriate to the job.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English. Must possess the skill, knowledge and ability essential to the successful performance of assigned duties.
  • Thorough technical skills in computer applications for web production, image handling, publishing and design, illustration, presentation preparation, animation, web interaction, and / or other state-of-the-art web communication capabilities.
  • Thorough understanding of the organization’s processes, procedures and applicable rules and regulations for web communications. Thorough knowledge of the fundamentals of design and user experience, including skills to design in an appealing, lively and relevant way.
  • Thorough knowledge of content management systems and / or relevant web applications used for web production and organization-specific computer application programs.
  • Knowledge of web standards for ADA compliance and cross-browser compatibility, and responsive frameworks. Thorough skills to create clear, easy-to-navigate, informative, accurate, well-designed, and functional web sites that provide web content consistent with the organization's message and in keeping with management directives and client objectives. Thorough technical skills in computer applications for web production, image handling, publishing and design, illustration, presentation preparation, animation, web interaction, and / or other state-of-the-art web communication capabilities.
  • Ability to oversee the development of film, including editing and producing high-quality video content for the web. Ability to create compelling headlines, copy and taglines for SEO and demonstrated understanding of best practices for web content development.
  • Ability to read, write and maintain HTML and other code languages essential for website development and digital communications.
  • Thorough skills to develop and implement original ideas and correctly identify and effectively solve problems.
  • Demonstrated skill in managing collaborative projects and developing support among diverse constituencies. Thorough interpersonal skills and ability to work with and provide service to all levels of constituents including alumni and donors.
  • Ability to work independently and complete tasks on time.
