Duties:
DUTIES: Performs direct patient support work on an Inpatient Psychiatric Unit (IPU) that is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Caring for patients with mental health disorders while on an inpatient psychiatric unit including observing, recording and reporting changes in the behaviors and providing reassurance and encouragement. Duties in direct patient support include but are not limited to: Establishes therapeutic relationships with patients; monitors/ensures that patients remain sa! fe while admitted; charts on patient status and progress inclu! ding vital signs and other appropriate assessments; performs patient and safety checks; assists in patientsÂ' Activities of Daily Living (ADLs). He/she will identify potential violent behaviors and when to intervene or seek help. He/she will conduct patient groups/activities. The incumbent will also perform administrative support responsibilities such as: Receive telephone calls; receive/greet patients/visitors in a prompt, respectful, and courteous manner; and orders supplies necessary to perform work functions. All tasks are performed in compliance with HIPAA requirements, JC guidelines, VA policies and VA SLC Health Care System regulations, and IPU Standard Operating Procedures. The incumbent reports to, and is supervised by, the IPU Nurse Manager.
Work Schedule: Rotating shift work, to include weekends and holidays.

Qualifications & Evaluations
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements within 30 calendar days following the closing date of this announcement.
Time-in-grade! : Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements. Time-in-grade requirements for the GS-05 level is 52 weeks at the GS-04 level.
Specialized Experience: In addition to the time-in-grade requirements, applicants must have one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-04 level. Specialized experience would include: Caring for patients with mental health disorders while on an inpatient psychiatric unit including observing, recording and reporting changes in the behaviors and providing reassurance and encouragement; administrative and/or clerical duties; maintaining clinical files/records; assisting with and/or performing diagnostic procedures; communicating with patients and families about care of patient; and interpreting request and instructions from medical or health care personnel. This experience must be documented and/or supported in your res! ume.

Education: Applicants may substitute e! ducation for the experience required for the GS-05 level. To qualify based on education you must have completed a 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with courses related to the occupation. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business or technical school, junior college, college or university for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcripts (Unofficial or official) with your application.

Combination of Education and Experience: Combination of Education and Experience: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at the GS-05 level. To calculate, first identify the percentage of required education you have earned (when substituting, you cannot use the first 60 semester hours that you earned). Then identify the percentage of required experience you possess. Add the two percentages. The total perce! ntage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify at the GS-05. For example, an applicant who has 9 semester hours of graduate level education (i.e. 50% of graduate education required) and 6 months of creditable specialized experience (i.e. 50% of the required experience) would equal 100% of the required experience for the position. A transcript (Unofficial or official) must be submitted with your application if you are basing all or part of your qualifications on education.
