Use software and/or databases to gather, store, manipulate, and analyze research data. Design and implement bioinformatics tools and processes with! in the ARUP Institute for Clinical and Experimental Pathology ® for genetic sequence, phenotype analysis, data mining or statistical modeling. Identify and resolve technical issues and propose upgrades to current R&D software. Use basic skills and knowledge to accomplish goals. Consult with senior peers on complex projects to learn through experience. Work under close supervision with limited latitude for independent judgment.
Reporting Function
This individual reports to the Scientific Director of Research Informatics for administrative responsibilities and relevant Medical Director(s) as appropriate for technical direction and priorities. Both the Scientific Director and Medical Director are responsible for professional development.
Essential Functions
1. Participate in efforts in computational tools development, data mining, and data integration to support Next Generation Sequencing/Microarray/Genetic Analyses, Comparative Genomic Ana! lysis and Data Presentation with limited guidance.
2.! Design studies and analyze data for publication by working with medical director(s) and R&D scientists.
3. Design and implement data analysis methodologies through hands-on programming.
4. Evaluate external software packages and integrate into in house environment.
5. Improve informatics infrastructure. Work with Scientific Director, IT Department, and R&D Staff to improve the accuracy and usefulness of clinical and research data, and to identify and evaluate software tools for analyzing data more effectively.
Academic Activities
- Support other researchers within ARUP.
- Initiate and pursue research projects in a âlead authorâ role
- Give formal presentations of research results at regular lab meetings, ARUP seminars, and professional meetings
- Organize data, draw conclusions and assemble those in written format for publication in peer reviewed journals
- Other duties as assigned
Education/Credentials required
- Bachelorâs degree in Bioinformatics, Computer Science, or relevant technical field
- Advanced degree in Bioinformatics or Computer Science.
- Basic proficiency in the use of biological databases and on-line resources/tools
- One year of computational experience using Linux or Shell scripting
- One year of previous scientific programming or tool development experience in sequence analysis or genotyping
- One year of experience post graduation in analysis of next generation sequencing data
- One year experience in development, optimization, and/or validation of test systems
- One year experience in data mining or machine learning
- Ability to communicate effectively in both writt! en and verbal English
- Continual assessment of current scientific literature
- Ability to work well with others
- Regular and reliable attendance
- Ability to work all required overtime
