Dog Trainer

Location: Kanab Utah

Description: Best Friends Animal Society is in need of Dog Trainer right now, this position will be placed in Utah. Work with care-giving staff to assess needs, develop and implement a training plan for each dog to increase adoptability and improve the dog's chances of remaining in the new home. Develop and present workshops for staff an! d visitors. Assist caregivers with making daily interactions with the dogs training opportunities.

Responsibilities:
Develop training programs for individual dogs and specific housing areas in Dogtown

Develop and implement training protocol for a specific area determined by management

Represent Best Friends Training methods internally and externally

Correspond with adoptive families regarding training and behavior of Best Friends dogs at the request of the adoption coordinators

Establish goals and educate staff on dog training methods

Assess dogs to determine training and behavior needs

Develop and present workshops and seminars for staff and visitors

Measure progress and re-assess training plans and recommendations as necessary for the development of Sanctuary dogs

Coordinate and assist with other related projects as requested such as writing training related articles, answering med! ia requests, etc

Will stay current on progressive and! innovative training techniques

Coach caregivers individually on training and behavior issues specific to the dogs in their care

Fill in caregiving role as needed

Must be able to work weekends/holidays/varying shift times

Other duties as assigned

Skills/Experience:
Strong interpersonal skills. The ideal person for this job would be personable, outgoing, patient, professional, and able to get along well with a variety of people. The ability to develop positive relationships with others and demonstrate sensitivity to the thoughts, feelings and perspectives of others

Accurate, appropriate, clear and concise written and verbal communication skills. Strong listening skills

Ability to make sound judgments and work independently in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to juggle multiple competing tasks and demands

Ability! to foster a cooperative work environment with staff as well as volunteers

Attention to detail and strong organizational skills

Resourceful. Must have the initiative to resolve problems and seek answers independently and enthusiastically persist until goals are achieved

Demonstrates personal accountability to ensure that all responsibilities are completed effectively and in a timely manner

Demonstrates approachability when dealing with the staff and general public Experience in interacting with the general public (customer service) preferred

The ability to remain pleasant, calm and objective in all situations

Knowledge of dog behavior and general training principles based on experience compatible with Best Friends goals and philosophy

Best Friends Dog Trainers must obtain CPDT-KA (Certified Pet Dog Trainer-Knowledge Assessed) Certification as a condition of employment

The ability to learn about and unde! rstand each dog as an individual with his or her own personality traits! , good and bad habits, past experiences, etc

Proficiency with Internet navigation and a variety of computer software applications including Microsoft Word, Excel, Google e-mails, Google calendar, Google documents, ADP, BFIS

Physical Requirements:
Must be able to routinely lift 40 to 50 pounds

Must be able to work out of doors in all weather conditions, with temperatures ranging from below freezing to 100 degrees

Must be able to walk dogs that pull hard on a leash

Must be able to bend, stoop, hike, walk, kneel, and lift
