Assistant Professor, Medical Anthropology

The Anthropology Program in the Department of Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology at Utah State University invites applications for a 9 month, tenure-track position in Medical Anthropology at the Assistant Professor level. Applicants with expertise in bio-cultural Medical Anthropology and Applied Community Health are encouraged to apply. Areas of interest should complement those of the current faculty and might include public and/or community health, global/international health, bio-cultural approaches to chron! ic and infectious disease, health disparities in minority popu! lations, community development and health economics or environmental health. Geographic area is open. Candidates should be prepared to: teach undergraduate courses in cultural and medical anthropology, and develop courses within their specialization; develop opportunities for student engagement in applied health settings; develop and maintain an active research program with a medical anthropology focus; pursue external research grants and/or contracts with NIMH, NIH, USDA, NSF, and/or similar agencies; and provide service to the department and the profession.

The position start date is August 1, 2014, and salary will be based on education and experience. Review of applications will begin November 15, 2013 and will continue until the position is filled.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities for this position will include:
1) Teaching undergraduate courses in cultural and medical anthropology (some dual-listed at graduate level),
2) Helpi! ng craft a medical anthropology minor,
3) Advising undergraduate students and possibly graduate students,
4) Conducting original research, including publishing in peer reviewed journals and submitting external grants
5) Committee and service appointments at the program, department, and university level, and
6) Service to the profession.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications
1) Earned doctorate (Ph.D.) in Anthropology with an emphasis in medical anthropology at an accredited university at the time of appointment
2) Strong record of academic training in cultural and medical anthropology, as indicated by coursework, thesis research, and other related activities
3) Demonstrated teaching experience and competency
4) Record of research and professional development activities, with research focus in applied or field settings

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications
1) Proficiency in quantitati! ve as well as qualitative methods
2) Strong teaching and publicatio! n record
3) Clearly-defined research agenda and strong research skills, with experience/interest in supervising students in applied or field settings domestically and/or internationally
4) Grant writing experience and success with agencies external to the university
5) Ability to synergistically expand on research interests of faculty within and beyond the Anthropology Program
